Visual models for how a virus spreads
Students will analyze visual displays of data about clusters of coronavirus cases and work in groups to develop their own visual model of virus spread. Then, students will discuss how the way data are displayed affect data interpretation, and how the displays might inform public health decisions. -
Mathematical models of a dog’s age
Students will define, apply and analyze a new mathematical model for determining dog age in human years before comparing it to an old version of the model. Then, students will give examples of mathematical models in other fields and think about models’ benefits and limitations. -
The home as laboratory
Science isn’t done just in a laboratory. Observing phenomena and collecting data in the real world are key parts of the scientific effort. This activity, designed for at-home learning, encourages students to collect and analyze data in their own homes to develop a research question for future exploration. -
A world of acoustics
Students will use decibel meters to understand how the volume of a sound changes as it travels away from a source. Concepts covered include sound waves, the inverse square law, absorption and reflection. The activity also asks students to consider how the characteristics of a space affect the sound. -
What’s that smell?
Students will explore how our sense of smell helps us interpret the world around us, and how those interpretations may vary. Students will practice analyzing data and determine how temperature affects vapor pressure and thus the intensity of scents. -
Lunar orbit
Students will practice analyzing and graphing data about the moon’s orbit. The activity will help students understand the Earth-moon system and the nature of elliptical orbits. -
Growing up mammal
Students will answer questions based on the Science News article “Here come the (bigger) mammals.” -
Unbalancing the carbon cycle
This activity covers where carbon is stored in the Earth, how carbon moves through Earth’s various spheres and how humans are impacting that carbon flow. -
Dusty data dive
Students will practice analyzing and graphing data using two data tables from a primary research study about space dust. -
Volcanoes, erupting now?
Students will review volcano monitoring data and learn how to use it to predict possible volcano behavior. -
Radical protection
Students will analyze a graph from the Science News article "Parkinson's pathways." -
Opioid data dose
Students will work individually or in small groups to study different parts of the CDC website on opioids and summarize their findings for the class.
